Proposed Vehicle, Equipment & Crews
Vehicle
Salt Spring Mobility is looking at using a Ford E-Transit. Its quiet electric drive and comfortable ride should make the journey more pleasant for passengers. Windows around the cabin would let in plenty of natural light, while separate heating and air conditioning for the rear cabin would help keep passengers comfortable throughout the trip.
Equipment
The van would be set up to carry either a stretcher or a wheelchair, with compliant access, restraints and safety equipment. The conversion would need to meet the applicable federal vehicle safety standards and BC-specific requirements for licensing, inspection, workplace safety and operation.
-
Powered rear lift: A hydraulic lift would make it easier to load and unload patients safely, with less manual lifting and handling.
-
Powered stretcher: A height-adjustable stretcher would make transfers easier for both patients and attendants, reducing physical strain and allowing attendants to concentrate on the patient's safety and comfort.
Crews
SSM would look to recruit people with relevant experience, including off-duty paramedics and school bus drivers. With appropriate training and clear procedures, the aim is to provide reliable, professional service which treats every patient with care and respect.
